Understanding the F&O Ban Period: SEBI Regulations & Trading Rules

The derivative segment in India provides leverage, but unchecked open interest can trigger catastrophic liquidity freezes and cornering of shares. To prevent market manipulation, the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) enforces the nse ban list mechanism based on Market-Wide Position Limits (MWPL).

MWPL represents the maximum number of outstanding derivative contracts allowed on any underlying security across all exchange participants. The limit is calculated as 20% of the non-promoter free-float market capitalization. When open interest surpasses 95% of this threshold, the security immediately enters the F&O ban period.

Rules of Trading During the Ban Period

When a stock enters the ban list, strict trading regulations take effect immediately:

  • No Fresh Positions Allowed: Traders and institutions cannot create any new long or short positions in futures or options.
  • Position Unwinding Permitted: Existing contract holders are fully permitted to square off, reduce, or close out their open positions.
  • Severe Exchange Penalties: If an investor creates fresh open interest in a banned stock, NSE levies an immediate penalty of 1% of the value of the trade (subject to a minimum of ₹5,000 and maximum of ₹1,00,000 per violation).
  • Exit Criteria: A security only exits the ban when its total open interest falls below 80% of its MWPL.

💡 Frequently Asked Questions — NSE F&O Ban List

What is the F&O ban period in NSE?

The F&O ban period is an exchange-enforced trading restriction triggered when open interest across all futures and options contracts of a stock exceeds 95% of its Market-Wide Position Limit (MWPL). Verify underlying contract sizes on our NSE F&O Lot Size List.

Can I buy or sell equity shares in the cash market if a stock is in F&O ban?

Yes. The ban applies strictly to futures and options derivatives. Normal delivery and intraday equity cash trading continues without any restrictions. Calculate brokerage on cash delivery with our Indian Stock Brokerage Calculator.

Can I square off existing positions in a banned stock?

Yes. Unwinding or closing out existing positions is completely permitted and encouraged by the exchange, as it reduces total open interest. Model risk with our Trading Risk Management Calculator.

When does a stock exit the F&O ban list?

A stock exits the ban list only after its combined open interest drops below 80% of its Market-Wide Position Limit. Check margin needs on our NSE F&O Margin Calculator.

What is the penalty for trading a stock in F&O ban?

NSE charges a penalty of 1% of the trade value (minimum ₹5,000 up to ₹1,00,000 per violation) on any client or broker initiating fresh positions in a banned stock.

What time is the daily NSE ban list announced?

NSE announces the provisional ban list for the next trading day every evening around 8:30 PM to 9:00 PM IST based on end-of-day open interest data. Compare daily institutional flows on our FII DII Data Analysis page.
