Why NSE Revises F&O Lot Sizes: The Dalal Street Mechanics
Every active trader on Dalal Street notices lot sizes shifting periodically. You wake up on expiry week, and suddenly Nifty trades in lots of 65, Bank Nifty trades in lots of 30, and Midcap Nifty adjusts to 120. Why does the exchange do this?
Under SEBI guidelines, the notional value of an exchange-traded derivative contract in India must stay within a targeted corridor — typically between ₹5 Lakhs and ₹10 Lakhs. When a stock rallies from ₹500 to ₹2,000, its contract value balloons four-fold. Without lot size cuts, small retail traders get priced out completely. Conversely, when a stock tumbles, the exchange raises the lot size to keep speculative micro-churn in check.

Key Index Benchmarks at a Glance
Here are the active contract lot sizes for major benchmark indices traded on NSE and BSE:
- Nifty 50 (NIFTY): 65 shares per lot. A 100-point move represents ₹6,500 per lot.
- Bank Nifty (BANKNIFTY): 30 shares per lot. A 100-point move represents ₹3,000 per lot.
- FinNifty (FINNIFTY): 60 shares per lot. Covers leading banking and NBFC leaders.
- Midcap Nifty (MIDCPNIFTY): 120 shares per lot. Tailored for high-beta mid-tier momentum.
- BSE Sensex (SENSEX): 20 units per lot. Traded on Bombay Stock Exchange derivatives.
How Contract Rollover Works During Lot Size Changes
When NSE Clearing announces a lot size revision circular, the change does not apply retroactively to existing near-month contracts. Existing positions expire under their original lot sizing. The new revised lot size applies exclusively to newly introduced far-month contracts. Always verify your broker’s order placement window during monthly expiry transitions.
